We’ve added new online classes for the month of September! Learn about poetic turn(s) in an 8-week workshop with Matthew Olzmann, fictional selves in a craft class with Meng Jin, and political love poems in a craft class with Chen Chen.
We're excited to continue creating virtual spaces for the community to gather in throughout this year. Our September classes are below, and you can browse our full lineup of classes here!
The Poetic Turn(s) with Matthew Olzmann
Poetry Workshop:
Mondays, 7:00 PM–9:30 PM ET
September 13th–November 1st
Open to Asian American writers
What is surprise and how is it created? This eight-week class will look at various strategies for making resonant poetic turns. The goal is to emerge at the end of the class with (at least) eight newly-made poems.
Beyond Empathy: Inhabiting Fictional Selves with the Intimate “I” with Meng Jin
Fiction Craft Class:
Thursday, September 16th
4:00 PM–7:00 PM ET
Open to all writers of color
Is empathy the primary purpose of literature? In this craft class, we will examine the limits of the empathy model of literature and do generative exercises to access the fictional “I”s in our own work.
The Love Poem as Political Poem with Chen Chen
Poetry Craft Class
Sunday, September 26th
3:00 PM–6:00 PM ET
Open to all writers of color
What role(s) does the love poem play in contemporary life? In this generative session, we’ll consider love as a radical action alongside the questioning of power and the seeking of justice.
Classes are either open to Asian American writers or all writers of color; please check the class details before registering. All classes will take place on Zoom and the class times listed are in Eastern Time. There are scholarships available for each class and deadlines are listed on the individual course pages.
