“The Kundiman Retreat was the catalyst for what became one of the most transformative summers I've ever had with my writing. As a Pacific Islander writer/spoken word poet, I went into this experience very cautionary because I wasn't sure what place I would have within the group. I typically feel marginalized often in AA/PI spaces, so I was a bit nervous about experiencing that here in Kundiman. I left this experience with new friends, new perspectives on voices. My favorite part about this retreat experience was receiving the gift of everyone's vulnerability, whether it was through a piece of writing they shared with us, or a story they told us over lunch or late at night after an impromptu cypher. I was incredibly grateful for the mentorship I received from each faculty member, and the investment that each of them had in my goals, growth, and future. After my one-on-one session with my mentor faculty member, I walked away with a re-invigoration of looking into PhD programs again: something that I did not expect to happen at this retreat. I feel motivated in helping other Pacific Islander writers apply for a chance to have a chance to experience a space that welcomes them as much as Kundiman welcomed/welcomes me. The compassion I received from everyone I connected with is a compassion that I aspire to have for myself and my writing moving forward. One that whispers fiercely: ‘You deserve to be here in all that you are, Terisa. Bring your entire story with you. Write.’”
