After Fukushima: A 24-hour Event (NYC)

  • St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery   (map)

March 11 marks the 5th anniversary of the tsunami, earthquake and the manmade nuclear tragedy in Fukushima, Japan. On March 11, 2016 as part of PLATFORM 2016: A Body in Places, Eiko and Danspace are organizing a Fukushima symposium (4 pm - 8pm) followed by Eiko performing at 9 pm in the church sanctuary.

A 24-hour vigil will start at 10 pm on March 11, during the installation of Eiko’s and William Johnston's Fukushima photographic series at Danspace Project inside St. Mark’s Church. 24 artists will participate by contributing one song, poem, prayer, chant, movement, or gesture every hour, on the hour.

Purvi Shah, April Naoko Heck, and Madhu Kaza will read during this marathon vigil, between 1 and 3 pm on March 12. More on the event at the Danspace website. RSVP on Facebook.

Eiko Otake and photographer/historian William Johnston have been traveling to sites through out Fukushima since 2011 to bear witness to the unspeakable loss there. Click for more information about Eiko's "A Body in Fukushima" project
