Beauty in Brevity: The Flash Nonfiction Essay
with Mark L. Keats

March 7th—May 2nd, 2022
MonDAYS, 8:00 PM–10:30 PM ET

Beauty in Brevity is an introductory level class designed to give students space to read, discuss, and write within the scope of the flash nonfiction form. This class will introduce and expand students’ awareness of the flash nonfiction essay using The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Nonfiction as well as focused reading and conversation on work in literary journals such as River Teeth’s online magazine Beautiful Things (250 words or fewer), Brevity (750 words or fewer), and Sweet (1500 words or fewer), among others. Students will become more aware readers of how writers utilize language, compression, imagery, voice, and arrangement with respect to the flash form to support their own writing of compelling flash nonfiction driven by generative exercises. Through an initial survey, students will have the option to workshop their work at least twice in a safe and supportive environment that encourages risk-taking, vulnerability, and personal growth or discuss their work through one-to-one conferences.

Notes: the textbook is not required for our course and assigned readings are not meant to be suggestive as models of which to emulate.
