Kundiman is once again participating in the Poetry Coalition's March themed programming! The Poetry Coalition is a national alliance made of more than 25 independent poetry organizations across the United States dedicated to working together to promote the value poets bring to our culture and lives. As a founding member of the Poetry Coalition, Kundiman presents programming on a theme of social importance each March. This year’s theme is “The future lives in our bodies: Poetry & Disability Justice.” The line “The future lives in our bodies” is from the poem “Femme Futures” by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha. Kundiman will present a free virtual workshop and the annual Postcard Project in honor of this theme.
Poetics of Disability Justice will be a 90-minute generative writing workshop led by writers and activists Em Dial and Laurel Chen. We will read poems by Cyrée Jarelle Johnson, Aurielle Marie, and Camisha L. Jones, applying Sheila Black’s understanding of disability poetics to crip time. We hope to build a thoughtful, intentional space that centers Disabled experiences and inspires Disabled writers to create work that bends language to meet Disabled poetics.
Kundiman fellows will participate in their annual Postcard Project! Fellows write and mail postcard poems to each other every day of the month of March. We hope to create a sense of community in these difficult times through the sending and receiving of physical mail. Please join us by writing your own postcards and sending them out–– tweeting us @kundimanforever, using the hashtags #PoetryCoalition, #DisabilityJustice, as well as #KundimanPostcards. If you'd like, e-mail an image of your postcard to communications@kundiman.org–– we will be featuring select postcards on our Twitter, and Facebook.
