WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF? WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM SOMEONE ELSE?
It was astonishing to learn how little I knew about my family history, traditions, and immigration. Before I know what I want, I must know who I am, and to do so I must fill the empty space that is currently my Asian American identity. I am eager to fill this void with words of my choosing. I learned that my interviewee holds his Asian American identity close; he celebrates Chinese holidays, enjoys old family recipes, and spends time with Asian American friends. To learn how he interacts with his Asian American side was to realize how much I hadn’t. I felt as if a light shone into warm the crevices of my unused culture. It is here. The light finds the areas that need attention, and this is what I learned from my interviewee and my peers.
