Travel & Accomodation Information

  • Travel to Fordham University
  • If you wish to take a car service from the airport, here is information on recommended car services. Phone app services may also be used. Note: Travel from the airport to Fordham University in the Bronx during rush hour can take an hour or longer. Please plan accordingly when booking your travels.
  • Parking is available at Fordham at $15/day and $25/overnight stay and can be purchased at the Security Booth.

    Check In and Check Out

    On Wednesday, check in will be conducted from 10am – 4:30pm at Campbell Hall. You can arrive at any time within that window. Upon entering Fordham’s gates, inform the security guard that you are attending the Kundiman Retreat. Fellows, faculty, and staff need to check out by 11am on Sunday. You are free to leave any time before 11am on Sunday, but a Saturday evening stay is mandatory. Should you need to contact a staff member by phone in reference to travel delays, etc. please call 347-570-0590.


    Dinner on Wednesday night is mandatory.

    The Kundiman staff will meet you on the ground level of Campbell Hall at 4:45 pm. Following dinner, fellows, staff and faculty will begin first introductions and readings. Bring 1 short piece (no more than 300 words) to share with the group.

    Mandatory Retreat Orientation

    Essential Retreat information will be given out to all fellows and faculty members during this orientation scheduled for Thursday, 9:30 am.

    Typical Day's schedule

    8:00 – 9:00 am: Breakfast
    10:00 am – 12:00 pm: Spark Writing Exercise/Writing Clinic
    12:30 – 1:30 pm: Lunch
    2:00 – 4:30 pm: Workshop
    5:00 – 6:00 pm: Dinner
    8:00 pm: Salon Reading
    9:00 pm: Evening Event

    Mandatory Residence

    It is expected that fellows and faculty are in residence at Fordham University for the duration of the Retreat. Please do not invite in outside visitors, or make plans to meet with visitors during the retreat. If you would like to explore New York City separate from the Retreat, please make plans to arrive in New York a few days before or after the Retreat to make arrangements for this. If you know that you will not be able to be in residence for the entirety of the Retreat, it is recommended that you select another year to attend.

    Accommodations and Dining

    Fordham University is a smoke-free environment. All fellows will be assigned suite mates. (Rooms are suites and bathrooms are shared.) Basic linens (pillow, sheet, towel, and blanket) will be provided. Buffet style meals, including vegetarian and vegan options, are served each day. Attendance at meals is mandatory for fellows, staff, and faculty. 

    master Classes

    As a fellow, you will have take a Master Class with each faculty member in your genre. Master Classes typically include a craft talk, a reading discussion, and a generative writing exercise.

    mentorship and manuscript reviews

    Each fellow will have the opportunity to consult with a faculty member for 30 minutes. During this time, the fellow may ask questions and will also have the opportunity to have a manuscript, sent ahead of time, discussed. 

    Computing

    If you have a laptop computer, please bring this. You will have access to a wireless network. Public computer lab and printing facilities will be available in Fordham’s Walsh Library during the following days and times.

    • Wednesday, Thursday: 8:30 am – 11:00 pm

    Summer in NYC

    As it can tend to be hot in New York during the summer, please make sure to bring lightweight clothing with you. The best rule of thumb is to bring layers. The dorms can be quite cool in the evenings.

    Off-campus visits and on-campus guests are not permitted.
